The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman.

When the author realised what a wealth of knowledge and life experience is locked away in the heads of older folk he was inspired write. Hence the concept was born: of a group of bolshy, mischievous wrinklies in a care environment solving a murder mystery. And developed into four septuagenarians, a female cop, and a big brutal murder for starters.

As stories go this one had sufficient plot, character differentiation, goodies, baddies that get their comeuppance and yet was a light read with some humour.

The book was generally but not universally enjoyed by the 10 people present for the review, although few of us could remember the exact number of murders being perpetrated. One reader snagged on the clandestine burial scene as being completely unrealistic. (Single handed moving a body, digging a grave, inserting the body, filling in, and finishing off in the dead of night).

For one member it felt like listening to the TV without looking at the picture. It’s as if he wrote the book as a series of film cartoons/ cameos, and then wrote the chapters from each cartoon, hence 115 chapters. Because you can’t see the actors you don’t get any nuances.

Overall a light and entertaining read.

3.55 stars.
