College Exercise Treble Bob Minor

About College Exercise Treble Bob Minor

College Exercise sits neatly between the standard Treble Bob methods and the simple, right place surprise methods.

Site Sections:

Structure

College Exercise is ďmerelyĒ Duke of Norfolk Treble Bob except when the treble is dodging in 5-6, the places are made in 3-4 and the bells in 1-2 are caused to dodge. Thatís all it is!

Place Notation:
X 34 X 16 X 12 X 34 X 56, 12, Bob 14, Single 1234.

Plain Course structure
The method is fairly static with triple dodges across both Lead End and Half Lead. The places work (place - dodge - place) is also consistent across both Lead End and Half Lead.

The Structure

The essential structure of Duke of Norfolk when the treble is below thirds is simply reversed in College Exercise when the treble is above 4ths. The main blue line artefact then is the places. Because itís Treble Bob, you hunt into and out of the places rather than starting or ending with a dodge. The places are either:
4ths dodge 3-4 down, thirds,
or the reverse:
3rds, 3-4 up, 4ths

The Rules

College Exercise Treble Bob - the rules
Ring Duke of Norfolk Treble Bob unless the treble is dodging in 5-6 when 3rds and 4ths places are made, and the bells in 1-2 dodge together.

Artefacts

The Blue Line features worth noting are the triple dodges front and back, and the places in 3-4.

Place Notation and Grid

The grid is a better memory aid than the Place Notation, however, College Exercise Treble Bob Minor is a good choice of method to practice Place Notation. It is highly akin to Oxford Treble Bob, just with 5ths Half lead, 2nds Lead end, and the 1-2 places becomes 3-4 places when the treble is dodging at the back.

Pictels

This is a straightforward structure, there is no compelling reason to chop it up into picture elements.

Ringing

Ringing College Exercise Treble Bob.

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and a signiificant help in ringing College Exercise Treble Bob Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

However, it is NOT suggested that ringers attempt to ring College Exercise Treble Bob Minor simply by the rules to gain "track the treble" skills. There are better methods in which to develop that skill.

Positional Awareness

The structure, which separates bells between 3-4 and 5-6 above the treble, and between 1-2 and 3-4 below the treble, is significantly helpful in developing the awareness of place inside the change rows. This is a helpful method.

Place Notation Elements

The method only contains 5 elements (X, 12, 16, 34, 56), all of which will already have been rung.

Place Bells, Pivot Leads, and Staging posts

For 3-4 pair, the pivot point is when the pair triple dodges together in 1-2.
For 5-6 pair, the pivot point is when they make places together in 3-4 under the treble.

Awareness of other bells

Because of the fairly static nature of the method, there is time to think, whilst ringing across the half lead, where other working bells will be at the following lead end.

Coursing Order in College Exercise Treble Bob Minor

Natural Coursing order is lacking in College Exercise.

On the front, 2nds place bell makes seconds over itís course bell (like Oxford TB), but then the next bell in the coursing order is 4ths place bell, the pivot bell, and it is working with the treble in 5-6. So the bell down to 2nds place bell is its after after bell, 6ths place bell. The next after bell comes down, leads and goes away leaving 6ths place bell at lead.

Ringing the Method

The great benefit of ringing College Exercise Treble Bob is that enables practice at all of techniques which are used in the simple Surprise methods.
