Opinions were divided on this book - just as the critics’ views varied from “dazzling” to “pedestrian”. Two people did not like the book at all, being unable to empathise with the main characters’ self-satisfied, successful and wealthy lives.
Nonetheless it was acknowledged that McEwan is undoubtedly a good writer and others of his books would be worth a read.
Others of us found it compelling reading with a sense of menace pervading the narrative.
The Iraq war demonstration, which two of us attended, provided an interesting backdrop.
