In Restoration
by Valerie Thornhill
Valerie read passages from her novel and gave us some interesting insights into its background and the process of writing.
Hearing the passages read aloud provided an illuminating and enhanced appreciation of the writing.
Valerie talked about the central theme of loss and the importance of the landscape with past and present forming an essential and integral part of its texture.
The discussion covered the act of writing, the development of characters and the extent to which real people and events were represented.
Valerie told us that most of the minor characters were based on real people and that her writing is character rather than plot driven.
The evening provided an enjoyable change from our usual format.
