On Beauty
by Zadie Smith

There were considerably different opinions expressed about this work although we did all end up giving it the same star-rating. Some of us did not like any of the characters – except Kiki – seeing them as horrible, self-obsessed and lacking any kind of morality; while others saw positive aspects and redeeming features in all the characters (with the possible exception of Monty).

To some Zadie Smith’s writing is at times over-wordy and a little too clever while to others it was marvelous and beautifully written. It presented an interesting picture of the insularity of the academic world which resonated with several in the group. It was agreed that whilst the description “hilarious” was somewhat of an exaggeration there were some very funny episodes in the book.

All agreed that it benefits from a second reading.
