The Story of Lucy Gault
by William Trevor

Tom had chosen this book partly because the author was born in the next street in his home town, Mitchelstown, County Cork.

While some different opinions were expressed it was generally thought that the book was beautifully written. It is a book which cannot be rushed in the reading but requires the reader to respond appropriately to the slow pace of sparse events. In this respect it resembles “Sky Burial” with its broad sweep of years, its luminous spiritual qualities and the importance of landscape and location. The part played by fate and/or chance in the unfolding of the tragic events of the story were discussed.

It was generally agreed that the reviewer who saw the book as little more than a padded-out short story had rather missed the point.
