The March
by E.L. Doctorow

For many of us whose knowledge of the American Civil War was based on little more than a viewing of “Gone with the Wind” the book was highly illuminating and informative. It was a book which many of us would not otherwise have read so we were grateful for Anne’s choice and for the interesting photos from the period.

There was general agreement that the book was beautifully written. It took a while to get into as there is no central protagonist except the march itself with the stories and the lives of the characters weaving in and out. The horrors and the devastation of civil war were brutally apparent but there was hope for the future with a heart-warming love story at the core. There were also from time to time surprising elements of humour.
