Everybody liked the book but to varying degrees.

To some it was beautifully written with brilliant characterisations and verged on perfection whilst to others it seemed at times long-winded and lacking in any leavening of humour or difference of mood. It certainly represents an aspect of the human condition as unremittingly sad.

At the core of the book is a gripping detective story which engages the reader and compels attention whilst serious historical and philosophical issues form an integral part. The stoicism and inscrutability of the main characters are striking and their similarities despite different cultural backgrounds. Issues of morality, prejudice, love and death are wonderfully dealt with.
