Winter in Madrid

There was general agreement that this was an absorbing and interesting story though less agreement regarding the literary merits of the book.
Some found it overly long and repetitive – and this reflected reviews which said that it suffered from the lack of a good editor.
The characters were seen by some as difficult to get into and rather two-dimensional while others saw this as effectively reflecting the historical context and contributing to a good yarn.
Some people knew little about the Spanish Civil War so the book was quite informative.
The structure of the book effectively drove the narrative along and whilst we may have had other books that were better written the story retained and compelled the reader’s interest.
