The Road
by Cormac McCarthy
There was quite a mixed response to this book although there was general agreement that while nothing much happens during this walk through a grey landscape the reader’s interest is held throughout.
Some found the language poetic and starkly beautiful whilst being devastatingly sad.
To some it was profoundly pessimistic and difficult to read; to others it was uplifting and offered a sense of hope, being essentially about love.
There was much speculation as to what devastating catastrophe had brought about this bleak and barren world
and to where the book fits in with post-apocalypse literature and McCarthy’s broader body of work with many anxious to read more (although some not so!).
