The book is set against the real and fairly recent background of the conflict in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, during which thousands of people lost their lives. It deals with horrific acts of violence but in an understated way. More important are the characters and their development.

Some of us loved the book having considerable affection for “Great Expectations” which is central to the story. Others were less convinced. Moving acts of heroism are crucial to the story’s development and despite the terrible tragedy there are redemptive and hopeful features. The discussion topics were useful – particularly one which asked us to talk about being read to as children. “Heidi” got most mentions.
