Guantanamo
by Dorothea Dieckmann
Most of us had difficulty with this book.
Anne found it compelling and cleverly written whilst others could not get past the first few pages.
It is certainly not an easy book to read in terms either of style or content.
The relentless and unforgiving narrative no doubt reflect the horror and injustice of the events described but generally failed to enhance our understanding of a situation which we all agreed was a terrible indictment of American policy.
It seemed self-evident to us that people, innocent or guilty, should not be treated in this way.
However to most of us the novel was neither entertaining nor enlightening and was rather a struggle to read.
