There was general agreement (only one dissenting voice) that this book should rightly still be regarded as a classic.
Several of us had read it in our teenage years but gained more from returning to it in later life.
Most people really enjoyed it praising the beautiful writing, rounded characterisation and brilliant description of landscape and place.
Nor is it without humour.
The book is of its time and assumes a level of learning among its readership and displays some attitudes which would be less acceptable today.
Nonetheless it draws upon the author’s own experience and provides an insightful social commentary of the period.
