One Day
by David Nichols
There were no claims for this book as a great work of literature.
Sue admitted to a guilty affection for a lightweight book and as such it was an easy, straightforward tale, well written, nicely observed and funny.
For some of us it was a good holiday read while others were not particularly engaged by it.
We had little sympathy with the main protagonists and their self-absorption although as a depiction of the shallow values of the Thatcherite 80’s it was very effective.
Some of us felt that it did not work as a love story and others that the structure to a degree dictated the content.
It was felt that the author would probably be capable of better things if he were to venture beyond his comfort zone.
