The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett.
With only one exception the group thoroughly enjoyed Alan Bennett’s novella – it was “a hoot”, “screamingly funny” and made Pete “chuckle throughout”.
Most thought it well written with typical Bennett dialogue and affectionate characterisations of public figures about whom we know very little.
“Books tenderize you” was a favourite quote and all agreed the author intended to promote reading and demonstrate how literature can change your life.
One dissident voice – a Bennett enthusiast – felt it was a “pot-boiler” which missed the mark somewhat and could have been further developed.
