Bright Day
by JB Priestly.

Many of us had not read Priestley before. Those of us who had had done so many years ago in our teenage years when he may have been a rather more popular author so it was quite like coming to him fresh.

He was a writer very much of his time and probably will not enjoy a huge revival. Nonetheless we all appreciated the contextual information providing us with a social, political and geographical setting for the novel which we all enjoyed to a degree although some found it disappointing. The book with its themes of memory and time and the harking back to a golden era is well-written and evidently contains a large element of autobiography. The plot is fairly slight but the descriptive writing and the evocation of time and place is wonderfully done.

Some of us were motivated to read more Priestley.
