There were mixed reactions to this book with some of us enjoying it and others finding it unsatisfying and implausible.

Many found the characters well-drawn and believable although the events were less so. Ellie’s romantic involvement with Charles in particular lacked credibility. Those of us who enjoyed it generally found the early parts of the book more satisfying than the conclusion. Others found it superficial.

Despite the title Ellis Island does not figure hugely and the background events of Irish history and the Jazz Age are not developed. In fairness it is a romantic novel not a political one and some felt that the fact that these issues were raised and sparked some interest was significant.
