This was yet another controversial tome provoking divergent opinions though the scoring revealed it as more generally popular than the first two books of the year.

Those who disliked it criticized the amount of detail. It may have been quite a good story but the amount of detail detracted from the whole. Some found it hard to get into but most found it well worth the effort. What seemed like disparate yarns – almost separate short stories – were cleverly and intricately woven together.

The stories of the characters, whatever their station in life, were compassionately and humanely told against a New York background and political events unfolding in the wider world.

The book is based on real life events that took place in New York in 1974 shortly after one book club member visited the city.
