The Enigma

The Code of the Woosters
by PG Wodehouse.

The Code of the Woosters
by PG Wodehouse.

Whilst we all agreed that Wodehouse is undoubtedly a good writer not everyone appreciated the humour.

Several of us had read Wodehouse as teenagers. For others it was a first encounter with the Jeeves and Wooster duo. Wodehouse virgins struggled for a while but some came to appreciate the gentle eloquence of the writing. Certainly Wodehouse is very erudite, casually referencing all fields of the creative arts and the witty writing seems effortless. Plots were more of a challenge to dear old Plum but they are cleverly and intricately worked through and possess a certain plausibility given the strange and class-ridden world that his characters inhabit.

The vilification of the author and accusations of collaboration with the Nazis seem largely groundless and we all enjoyed his mockery of the odious Roderick Spode and his Black Shorts.
