Exposure
by Helen Dunmore.

An excellent choice of book for a book group in that it promoted lots of discussion and polarised views. For some, the book was not a spy story, but rather about people, relationships and the cold war. The prologue tells the reader that all will be resolved in the end- a fact that escaped at least two readers. Some felt that it was a book about love, loyalty and betrayal, secrecy and exposure: Simon’s loyalty to Giles, Giles’s loyalty to communism and Lily’s deep loyalty to her husband.

In the opinion of some, the characters were well draw and the book was an excellent depiction of the British class system. The children were well behaved and stepped up to the mark-comparisons were drawn with the Railway Children by some. For those who viewed the book in a positive manner, the ending was excellent and the book a page turner.

Others did not view the book in such a positive light. Some felt the book lacked momentum and was formulaic. Some found it difficult to connect with the characters and didn’t see why Simon didn’t just simply put the file back. The ending was disliked.
