The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper

by Phaedra Patrick

A much enjoyed visit to Victoria Dock to Elaine and Steve’s and a view to die for.

Most found the book an easy read and for some it was charming and whimsical. Most felt that the character of Arthur developed throughout the book as he became more self-confident and adventurous.

Whether people enjoyed the book or not was dependent on how far the reader was prepared to suspend belief and for some this was seen as a weakness in the book. For some it was thought unlikely that someone with Arthur’s character would embark on such adventures. The adventures themselves required a suspension of belief. The word far-fetched appeared in a number of critiques. Some were puzzled as to why Miriam had not told Arthur about these chapters in her life, feeling that the topics would certainly have cropped up. Others wondered why someone as adventurous as Miriam would have married him. Miriam was obviously content with her lot having married Arthur and seems to have changed.

For others it was a lovely book with delightful kind characters. There was much humour in the book such as the incident with the tiger and Arthur becoming a nude model at Scarborough College. It is an optimistic book with Arthur’s children proving to him that he did have a wonderful marriage with Miriam and that she felt ready to move on with her life. All turns out well. Arthur is reconciled with his children; Bernadette’s lump is benign and Nathan is going to pursue a career in catering.

With thanks again to Steve and Elaine.
