"Round Ireland with a Fridge" by Tony Hawks.

The book was chosen by Gwynneth who was aware of the author as an actor and comedian from other sources. On reading the book she could “hear” Tony Hawks.

The book is a travel diary from a journey that was committed in an alcoholic moment. The journey required Tony Hawks to hitch-hike around Ireland including visiting two offshore islands, in the space of one calendar month and taking a fridge with him.

The journey was completed and hence the book was written. There was general consensus that the author had fallen lucky in obtaining the support of a radio station early in the journey and it should be noted that the journey pre-dated online maps. The fridge which might have been a hindrance was actually helpful in identifying the owner as “above board” to potential givers of lifts.

Various detailed comments from club members were noted including:

  • Whilst Tony had managed to capture the kindness of the nation, he had failed somewhat to capture their eccentricity.
  • Ireland has become an EU member
  • Political and religious divisions have lessened.
  • Hitch Hikers are rarely seen.

Overall an easy read with some laugh-out-loud moments.
