"Birth of Venus" by Sarah Dunant.
The book is a solid chunk of mixed history and fiction set in the Medici era (late 15th Century) in the city state of Florence.
The protagonist is Alessandra Cecchi and comes from a merchant family.
The novel covers the impact of the Savonarola era, the repressive culture, and homosexuality.
Some of the scenes in the book are of a surprising, visceral, graphic nature.
The book had a mixed reception at the club.
The historicity was well received, the quality of the writing was praised, and the story line flowed well.
However, some of the relationships and behaviours were badly received.
Two club members found the graphic images in the book conflicting with their fond memories of a visit to Florence.
Various detailed comments from club members were noted including:
Positive:
- The link between the prologue and the ending was clever.
- Extensively researched
- Well written
Negative:
- The prologue was revolting
- The sex scenes felt like soft porn
Interesting:
- The book was simultaneously beautiful and depressing.
- Some people, having finished the book were unsure what they made of it.
Doorly score: 3.3
