Treble Dodging Minor - Nelson Treble Bob

Nelson Treble Bob Minor

About Nelson Treble Bob Minor

Nelson Treble Bob Minor introduces fluid hunting work above the treble. Below the treble the work is very similar to Kent and Oxford but with a disruptive 3rds place Half Lead.

3rds place bell is the pivot bell and with the 6ths place lead end, the calling sequence for 6ths observation is as per Reverse Bob.

The essence of this method (as a progression beyond Oxford TB) is the hunting work above 1-2 for the 1-2 sections.

Goals

Goals and learning approach

What you are trying to achieve needs to drive your approach.

Ringing by structure

If you are ringing any method to gain the skill of associating method structure with the work of the treble (valid goal), DO NOT learn the lines, learn the structure, ring, make mistakes and learn from them. Track-the Treble skills, Place Notation skills, coursing order skills can all be developed in this manner

Performance Level

If you are wishing to achieve 720s, Quarters, or peals:
start with the structural ringing as above, add in the bits that are natural to you.
Study the lines.
Practice a lot.
Achieve some performances .

Method Mastery Level

It is unusual for a band to wish to achieve mastery in a method like Nelson.

The Structure

The essence of the method is Oxford Treble Bob, but with significant differences.

The Rules

Nelson Treble Bob Minor - the rules
Ring Oxford Treble Bob except:
When the Treble dodges in 1-2, ring a 4-bell hunting box in 3-4-5-6
At the Half Lead, 3rds pace is made which inserts a dodge in 1-2 and breaks up the slow work
When Treble Leads, 6ths is made and the hunting pattern is continued.

Artefacts

The half lead place disrupts the slow work.

Place Notation and Grid

The pictorial grid emphasises the structure of the method better than the Place Notation.

Pictels

As with Oxford Treble Bob Minor, the rules are a good approach to the method, and splitting into individual elements is of no value.

Ringing

Ringing Nelson Treble Bob Minor.

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and is the major key to ringing Nelson Treble Bob Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

Positional Awareness

Nelson Treble Bob Minor is highly fluid, extensive practice is needed if this is the first Chadkirk Group method to be learned.

Place Notation Elements

The method only contains 5 elements (X, 36, 16, 12), all of which will already have been rung.

Place Bells, Pivot Leads, and Staging posts

For 3-4 pair, the pivot point is when the pair dodges together in 1-2, a sort of slow work hand-over.
For 5-6 pair, the pivot point is when they cross over in 4-5 at the Half Lead.

Awareness of other bells

Most ringers on encountering Nelson Treble Bob find it quite tricky to ring well, at least to begin with, and have little spare mental capacity for considering other bells.

Coursing Order in Nelson Treble Bob Minor

As with Chadkirk TB, Nelson TB exhibits glimpses of natural coursing order. An experienced ringer will pick out the parts that are valuable to them, others should concentrate on features that are more helpful

Ringing the Method

Nelson Treble Bob Minor makes excellent use of the skill of following the treble in combination with the structural variation on Oxford TB.

Calls

Bobs and Singles.

Bobs replace the 6ths place at the Lead End with 4ths. This causes the bell that has just made 3rds to make the bob, make thirds once more, and also ntroduces a dodge in 5-6

Singles Singles are rarely used in Nelson Treble Bob Minor.

Touches

Touches of Chadkirk Treble Bob Minor.

4ths place bell is the pivot bell, and hence the first lead end is 135264 giving calling positions from the tenor as:
4ths, Out, In, Home, Wrong (as per Reverse Bob Minor).
