Treble Dodging Minor - Evening Star Delight

Evening Star Delight Minor

About Evening Star Delight Minor

Coventry is a member of the group of methods having Oxford Treble Bob above the treble, but with a 1-6 half lead making 3 the pivot bell.

As with Oxford Treble Bob, the coursing order is disrupted, the normally hard pair, 3-4 has some easy coursing, bits, and the normally easy pair, 5-6, is quite tricky.

Goals

Goals and learning approach

What you are trying to achieve needs to drive your approach.

Ringing by structure

Get going:.
Use whatever learning approach you like most to acquire enough knowledge to ring a plain course. Ring a few and see what aspects of the method spring out, and study these. Practice until courses and simple touches are ringable.

Performance Level

If you are wishing to achieve 720s, Quarters, or peals:
start with the "get going" as above, add in the bits that are natural to you.
Study the Double Place Bell sequences, and the lines.
Practice a lot.
Achieve some performances .

Method Mastery Level

It is unusual for a band to wish to achieve mastery in a method like Evening Star.

Artefacts

The Blue Line feature worth noting is that

  • 2nds place bell, after dodge 1-2 down, lead, does far-dodge-near and leaves the front.
  • 3rds place bell arrives on the front, rings far-dodge-near, lead for the Half Lead, far-dodge-near, and leaves the front.
  • 5ths place bell arrives on the front, rings far-dodge-near, and then lead and dodge with treble.

The dodge of far-dodge-near is always as the treble is passing through a cross-section caused by a 36 Place Notation element.

5-6 pair is symmetrical when ringing 4ths and 6ths place bells. The double line looks like a double Christmas Cracker.

Place Notation and Grid

The choice here is personal preference. The author’s preference is the visual nature of the grid.

Pictels

The x12x sections can be thought of, structurally, as "Plain Bob Lead Ends", but see below.

Ringing

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and a significant help in ringing Evening Star Delight Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

Place Notation Elements

The method only contains X, 36, 12, 16, 34.

Place Bells, Pivot Leads, and Staging posts

3rds place bell is the pivot bell, see notes above.

Awareness of other bells

The x12x when in each 3-4 and 5-6 section should be noted as being unlike Oxford and Kent owing to the disruptive factor of the 36 cross-section.

Coursing Order in Evening Star Delight Minor

Natural Coursing Order is compromised by the “Oxford above” nature of the work above he treble.

Ringing the Method

Just enjoy it, it’s easier than expected, especially if you have rung plenty of Oxford TB.

Calls

Bobs and Singles.

Bobs replace the 2nds place at the Lead End with 4ths as per Plain Bob.

Singles are not needed in every-day ringing.

Touches
