Capel Treble Bob Minor

About Capel Treble Bob Minor - Complib

Capel is harder to ring than the standard methods like Oxford Treble Bob in that it calls for leading wrong and dodging wrong.

Capel can be approached simply as Ockley Treble Bob with 6ths place Lead End.

The intricacies of work in 1-2 and in 3-4 when treble is in 5-6 need careful study and practice.

All the excitement happens when the treble is dodging in 5-6 with the bells in 1-2 ringing "point-near-far-point", and the bells in 3-4 ringing Kent Places with a double dodge in the middle.

Learning

Learning Capel Treble Bob.

Approach

If you are essentially a "lines ringer", then the notes above and a review of the lines will get you going. The Place bell sequence is Little Bob / Duke of Norfolk (4ths place bell is pivot).

If you are essentially "grid / place notation ringer", then the notes above will be of passing interest. You will want to study the pairs in detail, particularly 3-4 but also as some of the spacings are weird.

The Rules

Ring London Scholars' Pleasure Treble Bob except that the triple dodge in 1-2 is replaced by point-near-far-point, and the far-dodge-near in 3-4 is replaced by "Kent-double-dodged-places".

Artefacts

The Blue Line features worth noting are the pointy work at the front, and the compromised Kent places in 3-4.

Place Notation and Grid

The grid is a better memory aid than the Place Notation, however, Capel Treble Bob Minor is a good choice of method to practice Place Notation. It is Oxford Treble Bob until the treble leaves 3-4, then you need to focus on 16.34x12.56.12x34.16 .

Pictels

There is no compelling reason to chop it up into picture elements.

Goals

Goals and learning approach

What you are trying to achieve needs to drive your approach.

Ringing by structure

Before you start on Capel Treble Bob, make sure you have extensive experience of Oxford Treble Bob together with some experience of the other right place Oxford Group methods like Sandal Treble Bob.

It would be sensible to get to performance standard in London Scholars' Pleasure Treble BobCollege Exercise before learning Capel.

If you are ringing Capel Treble Bob purely to gain experience in backward leading and dodging then use whatever is your favoured approach to get going. Ring some courses, review your experience.

Performance Level

If you are wishing to achieve 720s, Quarters, or peals:
start with the structural ringing as above, add in the bits that are natural to you.
Study the lines and spacings.
Practice a lot.
Achieve some performances .

Method Mastery Level

It is unusual for a band to wish to achieve mastery in a method like Capel Treble Bob.

Ringing

Ringing Capel Treble Bob.

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and a signiificant help in ringing Ockley Treble Bob Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

However, it is NOT suggested that ringers attempt to ring Ockley Treble Bob Minor simply to gain "track the treble" skills. There are better methods in which to develop that skill.

Positional Awareness

The backward work under the treble is stable rather than fluid; after a while the extended Kent Places become easier.

Place Notation Elements

The method only contains 5 elements X, 12, 16, 34, as per Oxford TB, plus the 16.34x12.56.12x34.16 ; enjoy!.

Double Place Bells

1-2, 1-6, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-2
3-4, 4-5, 5-2, 2-6, 6-3, 3-4
5-6 Pair in coursing order: 6-5, 3-2, 4-6, 5-3, 2-4, 6-5
NB: This sequence is also found in Sandal Treble Bob Minor.

Pivot Leads

Pivot bell, is 4ths Place Bell.
For 3-4 pair, the pivot point is when the pair ring the point near far point together in 1-2.
For 5-6 pair, the pivot point is when they ring the extended Kent Places together in 3-4 under the treble.

Staging posts (handrails)

For an experiienced ringer, the Oxford TB parts are fairly relaxing giving chance to pick up on the coursing order.

Awareness of other bells

This is a complex method, the bells working togther are very helpful to each other.

Coursing Order in Capel Treble Bob Minor

The Oxford places and half lead structure make coursing order quite difficult to apply to Ockley Treble Bob. Nevertheless, start with:

  • 2nds place bell makes seconds (when treble is in 3-4 up) over its course bell (3rds place bell) and then leads again.
  • Then its afterbell (4ths place bell) does dodge-lie-dodge-5ths-dodge-lie-dodge.
  • As the afterbell is starting the backwork, the bell after the afterbell (6ths place bell) comes down to the front (just as it does in Oxford TB) to work with the 2nds place bell
  • 2nds place bell then leaves the front and 6ths place bell works with its afterbell (5ths place bell) as treble returns to ring 3-4 down.

And:

  • As per Oxford Treble Bob, 6ths place bell and 5ths place bell Treble Bob hunt down in natural coursing order, 6 before 5.
  • As 6 starts working in 1-2, 5 does the near-double-dodge-far with its after-bell, 3rds place bell.
  • 5ths place bell continues on to the front as noted above, while 3rds place bell passes the treble 4-5 and goes into the "Oxford above" region.

Ringing the Method

The great benefit of ringing Capel Treble Bob is that enables practice at all of techniques which are used in the simple Surprise methods.
