Ringing Northumberland Surprise Minor.
Track the treble
Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods,
and a significant help in ringing Northumberland Surprise Minor.
Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the
techniques
section.
Positional Awareness
Place Notation Elements
Northumberland only contains elements 34X36, 12, 14, 36, 16, all of which will already have been rung.
Place Bells, Pivot Leads, and Staging posts
The double place bell sequence are as Double Bob and Cambridge, but the value of this is obscured by the backward hunting across the Lead End.
Awareness of other bells
Northumberland Surprise is very fluid by nature, ring plenty of Ipswich to understand how it fits together under the treble.
Focusing on the flying bells is a good way to start building an awareness of the work of the other bells.
Coursing Order in Northumberland Surprise Minor
Northumberland preserves the natural coursing order at the lead end which is valuable to the conductor for checking the bells working correctly at the calls.
Below the treble Northumberland is delightful in exhibiting pure natural coursing order at the half lead.
The pivot bell leads, whilst the parted pair dodge cross in 2-3 and the coursing pair cross in 4-5.
After 2nds place bell has lead for the 2-3 cross-section, the bells lead in reverse natural coursing order viz:
(After 2), 4, 2, 3 (half lead pivot), 5, 6; and then 5 goes back to lead to meet the treble.
Overall
There is no substitute for just ringing a lot.
Maybe 1,000 courses is just the start.
