Treble Dodging Minor - Ludlow Delight

Ludlow Delight Minor

About Ludlow Delight Minor

Ludlow is a member of the group of methods having pure Kent Treble Bob above the treble.

Below the treble, 3rds place is made at the 4-5 cross-sections and at the half lead. The asymmetrical work in the 5-6 section creates pointy work in 3-4.

Ludlow Delight Minor is one of a group of 3 Treble Dodging Delight methods all having identical work below the treble.

At of September 2025 Bellboard had just 3 performances that included Ludlow Delight Minor.

Goals

Goals and learning approach

What you are trying to achieve needs to drive your approach.

Ringing by structure

Get going:.
Use whatever learning approach you like most to acquire enough knowledge to ring a plain course. Ring a few and see what aspects of the method spring out, and study these. Practice until courses and simple touches are ringable.

But this is a valuable method for developing the ability to associate structure with the treble's position, whilst also developing the skill of continuously following the coursing order. Also, this gives excellent practice at leading wrong.

Performance Level

If you are wishing to achieve 720s, Quarters, or peals:
start with the "get going" as above, add in the bits that are natural to you.
Study the Double Place Bell sequences, and the lines.
Practice a lot.
Achieve some performances .

Method Mastery Level

It is unusual for a band to wish to achieve mastery in a method like Ludlow.

The Rules

Ludlow Delight Minor - the rules:
This method is not suitable for ringing by rules.

Ludlow Delight Minor - alternative rules:
Ring Warwick Delight Mino with a 6ths place (pure Kent) Lead End.

The Structure

Familiarity with the grid is very valuable owing to the separation between the pair in 1-2 versus the other 4 bells.

Track the treble

Awareness of the position of the treble is a key skill for most bellringing methods, and a significant help in ringing Ludlow Delight Minor. Some hints and tips for developing the skill are given in the techniques section.

Positional Awareness

Apart from leading wrong in the asymmetrical 5-6 section, the method is well behaved.

Ludlow has a layer of difficulty in 1-2 owing to the backward leading; dealing with this:

  • Study and memorise the double blue lines.
  • Avoid the towerbell blue line diehard "stedman whole turns", instead recognise the point as first the transition out of right place into backward leading and then the transition back out of backward leading into right place working.
  • The first point is preceded by a standard X12X (treble in 3-4 up)
  • The second point is immediately followed by a standard X12X (treble in 3-4 down)
  • "Points" are rung in 1-2 when treble is starting and then finishing the 4-5 Cross Section
  • Further "Points" are rung in 1-2 when treble is dodging in 5-6.

There is no substitute for learning the detailed spacings for the pairs.

Place Notation Elements

The method has 34X34, X, 36, 12, 12X14, 16.

Place Bells, Pivot Leads, and Handrails

156342 LE 16: Double Court Bob; Sandal Treble Bob, Hull Surprise

1-2:1-2, 1-6, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-2

5-6:6-5, 3-2, 4-6, 5-3, 2-4, 6-5

Pivot Leads

Pivot bell, is 4ths Place Bell.
For 3-4 pair, the pivot point is when the pair cross over in 2-3 at the Half Lead.
For 5-6 pair, the pivot point is when the pair cross over in 4-5 at the Half Lead.

Handrails

There are no handrails.

Awareness of other bells

See notes on Cursing Order below.

Coursing Order in Conway Delight Minor

  • Natural Coursing Order is well preserved throughout (NB Kent above).
  • Below the treble, the frontwork bells arrive and depart in Natural coursing order.
  • 4ths place bell pivot gives the abc effect on the three bells starting with a as 2nds place bell. b is pivot bell, a and c cross in 2-3 when the pivot bell leads at the half lead, and c goes on to eventually dodge with the treble in 1-2. c then hands over to d as the next 2nds place bell.
  • d and e are a coursing pair and dodge together in 5-6 in both 3-4 sections, and cross in 4-5 at the Half Lead.

Ringing the Method

The pointy work makes it look hard.
