FAIRTRADE CITY PROJECT NEWS AND EVENTS DIARY- 2006

CHOCOL-8 THE COCOA SUMMIT, HULL, 7th June 2006

March 2006
Hull - Fairtrade City celebrations in Fairtrade Fortnight included a food tasting session in Queen Victoria Square, under the big screen, which was used to show the PaPaPaa DVD. Click (here) for a full report of Cocoa and Chocolate activities in Hull during Fairtrade Fortnight.

Dubble and Divine Fairtrade Chocolate Company and Comic Relief had recognised a need to work in the North of England (as well as London) to raise the profile of Cocoa farming, and chose Liverpool and Hull for "treatment" during 2006. Hence the Hull COCOA Summit was borne.

The basic concept was to educate both youngsters and teachers how to change the world chuck by chunk, and following a visit to Hull the brand new Freedom Centre on Preston Road (right next door to the Co-op with lots of Fairtrade products) was chosen as the venue.
April 2006
The visit also included an ideas and problems session with teachers from both Hull and East Riding schools, as well as local Fairtrade activists.

May 2006
So the plot was set, secondary schools were contacted, flyers were distributed, and schools were encouraged to take part.
Hull InPrint, May 2006:

This was a nasty shock for the teachers, because they were

The energy and interest generated by the summit
Showing the energy generated by the lively workshops and presentations.

Reflections on the event:

  • This was the greatest number of people ever to gather in Hull to work on Fair Trade.
  • Team work between Kuapa Kokoo, Day, Trading Visions, Comic Relief, BBC, One World Hull, Fairtrade City Project, DEC, Freedom Centre staff
  • The Ghanaians were just incredibly good, spellbinding
  • Youngsters communicating with youngsters
  • 120 (or more) young people engaging with the issues of trading and campaigning
  • 20 to 30 professional educationalists engaging with how to facilitate the youngsters
  • Schools from far and wide (Selby, York, Pickering, Withernsea, Hornsea, Hull)
  • Interest from Leeds DEC
  • Three slots on BBC Radio Humberside
  • We stand shoulder to shoulder with Liverpool and London
  • This event came to Hull because of the work done by many people over the years, growing into the Fairtrade City Project, and continuing to grow after Fairtrade City Status was achieved. Hull is becoming known as a hotbed of Fairtrade activity.

Moving Forward

The Summit meeting was a stage in the journey. Now the output from the filming and the photographs, and the delegates' work is being collated into the summit manifesto.

Then the manifesto will be delivered (June 13th) to Hilary Benn at the Department for International Development, And also to Sainsbury's (June 15th). Copies will be provided to delegates.

Then the new Dubble Agents start work!
