Government report:

The printed pages provided by our MP Diana Johnson have been scanned and are available viz:
4 Page report
As ever, the government statements have more waffle than substance. The claim is that the talks were neither a success nor a failure.

Fairtrade Advocacy Office Statement:

Please find following the Fair Trade statement on the outcomes of the 6th WTO Ministerial Meeting in Hong Kong.

The international Fair Trade movement was present in Hong Kong with dozens of Fair Trade producers, campaigners and advocates for more trade justice. A Fair Trade Fair, Reception, Fashion Show and a Fair Trade Symposium attracted several hundreds of visitors and participants. You can get some impressions of the activities in Hong Kong click this link.

While we could not achieve a “fair” outcome of the WTO negotiations, we did show that Fair Trade constitutes a real alternative towards more trade justice!
With best seasonal greetings.

Fairtrade City Project Opinion:

Trade Justice was always going to be a big challenge, but the collective will of the political community shows more abilty at hard bargaining than it does in compassion and justice. If you are an impoverished farmer or artisan then don't hold your breath waiting for the improvements negotiated in Hong Kong.
Question: So what in Hull do we do?
Anwer: We carry on carrying on.
We must not be defeated, take it as a setback.

Read this from Bruce Crowther, the man who started Fairtrade Towns:

Dear all,

It has been another wonderful year for Fairtrade: sales of Fairtrade products are still rising at a rate of around 40% each year making the UK now the world leader with regard to retail sales of Fairtrade products, this year's Mori Poll showed over 50% recognition of the FAIRTRADE Mark and you will know that with the launch of cotton in November there are now well over 1,000 products that carry the FAIRTRADE Mark and again this figure is rapidly rising.

We now have 149 Fairtrade Towns, Cities, Villages, Islands, Boroughs, Counties and Zones in the UK with Fairtrade Towns now also in Belgium and the Republic of Ireland. A similar initiative based on our model is running in Vancouver, Canada and hopefully an initiative will start up in the USA in 2006.

Finally, the most important fact for me, and I'm sure for you also is that Fairtrade is presently benefiting the lives of 5 million farmers, workers and their families in 58 countries across the world. This is in part due to you!

I have always said that our activists and volunteers are the heart and backbone of the Fairtrade movement.

Through Fairtrade you are really making a difference and I want to both thank you and wish you all a:

MERRY CHRISTMAS and another very fulfilling

HAPPY AND SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR!

Bruce Crowther
